Welcome to Autumn

While leaf fall prompts thoughts of a hunker-down at home in front of the fire, it may also be a good quiet time to fit in a UK staycation – and why not make it a spectacular one? We have some splendid suggestions from The Landmark Trust, who restore interesting old properties then let them out for holidays. Exciting choices include castles, lighthouses and stately home estates.

The latest in their portfolio is Cobham Hall Dairy (featured in our spring magazine), where stained glass artist and conservator John Corley was involved in the restoration. We meet John in his Deal studio and learn of his inspiration from Canterbury Cathedral – and that he has just received a prestigious award.

Another man with a passion for preservation is Bob Lovell of the Antique Oak Flooring Company near Ashford. Bob is a keen advocate for saving and re-using beautiful old timber.

Talking of wood, in this autumnal issue our regular garden feature is all about tree-planting, and we also bite into the most popular tree fruit to discuss the versatility of apples!
